Referal to a specialist

Example: Chris has had a skin problem for some time, and has had numerous appointments with his GP. His GP has admitted that he is unsure how to resolve the problem, but does not feel that it warrants a referral to a specialist Consultant. Chris believes that it is his right to have a referral, and wants to know how to obtain one.

It is a common myth that patients have the right to be referred to a Consultant if they feel their condition warrants it. However it is down to your GP to make the decision whether to refer or not, dependant on your clinical need.

If you feel that your GP’s assessment of your condition is incorrect and you do warrant a consultation, you should seek a second opinion from your GP..

 

You have a right to be referred to a consultant acceptable to you, when your GP thinks that it is necessary.
