Patients at the Heart of the NHS

On Tuesday 7th February patients and health professionals will come together in Manchester to learn from each other about delivering the best care for patients.

The Partners in Care Conference is the first time an NHS organisation and The Patients Association have come together to organise such a learning event.

The conference will be hosted by the Patients Association’s Vice President, Angela Rippon and will see speakers from various organisations including:

•             Dame Christine Beasley, Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Health

•             Kathryn Hudson, Deputy Ombudsman, Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman

•             Deborah Westhead, Acting Regional Director, Care Quality Commission

•             Professor David Oliver, National Clinical Director for Older People, Department of Health

•             Martine Price, Head of Patient Experience, Musgrove Park Hospital

•             Sir Stephen Moss, Chair, Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust

Gill Heaton, Chief Nurse at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our organisation prides itself on the excellent care we strive to give to our patients.  Over recent years we have introduced a number of projects to ensure that standards are not only maintained, but are improved, such as our Quality Campaign and Brilliant Basics initiative. We are excited that this event will give us the chance to not only show case our work, but to learn from others what improvement opportunities could be developed for the future.” 

Katherine Murphy, Chief Executive at The Patients Association says: “The Patients Association is delighted to have this opportunity to work with Central Manchester University Hospitals Trust, and we hope to generate a wide ranging debate about nursing care. It is fantastic that the event will hear from the Chief Nursing Officer, as well as representatives from the Care Quality Commission and the Health Ombudsman.  Our report into poor care released last November highlighted some appalling cases, and our CARE campaign is focusing on improving care in four fundamental areas - communication, pain relief, toileting and nutrition.  For improvements to be made and sustained all facets of the healthcare system must show a willingness to share ideas and, where poor care is identified, to tackle it robustly.

“I believe that this event, which is the first of its kind that is jointly led by patients and professionals, is a further step forward in that process and I hope in the future it will be seen as a key milestone in the battle to improve care in our hospitals.”

Angela Rippon Vice President at the Patients Association says: “Action needs to be taken to combat poor care where it occurs on our hospital wards, something that has been highlighted in several reports published by the Patients Association and others.  The Patients Association is leading the way in encouraging joint initiatives on patient care within the health service, and in ensuring that the issue remains at the top of the NHS agenda.  I am really looking forward to hearing from our outstanding panel of experts and debating with them to hear their ideas for improving the way that the NHS cares for people in hospital. I would like to think that the lessons learnt during the course of the day will have a direct impact on the care that is being delivered across the country.”
